Forest Stewardship
Thousands of Blue Spruce, Red Pine and White Pine had been planted on the property over the years which are now all mature, including American Chestnuts. In a panoramic view of the property, almost every Northern Michigan tree is in this forest. Careful forest management practices administered by an MSU forester over the last 25 years created careful select cuts of various species.
The last cut of ash in 2013 created felled treetops which were deliberately left on the ground so that they could be used by animals for shelter, especially birds like grouse.
An extensive Forest Management Plan through the USDA was completed in 2020 and is available for review. A forest management plan outlines your vision for your forest, describes the current conditions, and outlines a future plan of action to keep the forest healthy.
The local USDA and Otsego County Conservation District have many free services to assist large landowners evaluate and manage their lands. Private landowners own a majority of Michigan's forests, so the state and federal governments have a vested interested in helping you manage these precious resources.
